15 Developing a Diverse Economy In Southern and Southwest Virginia A well trained workforce is a vital part of a vibrant, diversified, and resilient economy. The Tobacco Commission has invested in work- force training programs that have awarded thou- sands of valuable certifications and credentials in Southern and Southwest Virginia. These ensure that the tobacco region has the workforce it needs to fill jobs available now and in the future. Attracting and retaining talented individuals is equally Important. Our Talent Attraction Program (TAP) will pay up to $12,000 per year of student loan debt for citizens who live in the region, become civically engaged, and work in certain in-demand fields. The Commission has made job creation, workforce training, and education top priorities for 20 years and will continue to do so as we move forward with our mission to grow the economies of Southern and Southwest Virginia.
